Does SEO still matter with AI search?
The way into AI answers is the same door as the way into search results.

Yes. Google says that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and that no other special optimisation is needed. So the basics, crawlable pages, clear answers, good titles and descriptions, and content people trust, are also the entry ticket to AI search. Search Console now reports how often your pages appear in Google's AI features.
What Google says
- Eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, meeting the normal Search technical requirements.
- No extras: there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Clicks: Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality: people are more likely to spend more time on the site.
- Controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what's shown, in AI features as in normal results.
What still counts
| Basic | Why it still matters |
|---|---|
| Pages can be crawled and indexed | Not indexed means not eligible for AI features either |
| A clear answer near the top | Easy for a person, and easy for a summary to quote |
| Accurate titles and descriptions | How people decide which link to open |
| Facts with sources and dates | What makes a page worth citing |
| Structured data | Spells out what a page is, such as an article, its FAQs or its offers |
| Pages people genuinely use | Google's ranking systems aim to reward helpful, reliable content |
How to measure it
Google says traffic from its AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Since June 2026 Search Console also has dedicated generative AI reports, rolled out to all websites by 31 August 2026, showing impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover. Why this matters for advertisers too
The pages that rank are the pages people read, and the searches behind them show who those readers are. That's why AdSworn lists each page with the Google searches that bring its readers: the same signals that win search tell you whom a sponsorship will reach.
| Real search | AdSworn's reading | Clicks, last 4 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| “mr best logo” | Buying intent | 6 |
| “freelance marketplace” | Buying intent | 4 |
| “best online video editor” | Buying intent | 2 |
| “companies with interesting history” | Buying intent | 2 |
| “dallas cowboys logo” | Research | 58 |
| “mr beast logo” | Research | 51 |
| “cowboys logo” | Research | 35 |
Straight answers
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. Google says pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode by being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so SEO is how you get there.
Do I need to optimise separately for AI Overviews?
Google says no: there are no additional requirements or special optimisations beyond the normal Search requirements.
Can I see if my site appears in AI Overviews?
Yes. Search Console's generative AI performance reports show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features, and AI traffic is included in the standard Performance report.
