Advertising in the age of AI: what changes, and what doesn't
AI changes where people look. It doesn't change that a business has to be found.

AI assistants and AI search answer more questions on the spot, so some searches that used to send a click now don't. But AI search still links to websites and still carries ads: Google shows ads above, below and within AI Overviews, and its AI features cite pages as supporting links. What changes is where attention sits; what doesn't is that a business has to reach the people choosing what it sells. Real pages with real readers, and proof of who those readers are, matter more, not less.
What AI changes
- More answers on the results page. AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise a topic with links to supporting websites.
- New places people ask. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer questions and cite pages.
- New crawlers. AI companies run separate bots for training and for search, and site owners can choose which to allow.
- New ways to measure. Search Console reports impressions in Google's AI features; Google Analytics has an AI Assistant channel.
- Content is cheap to make. That makes proof, real readers and real numbers, the scarce thing.
What doesn't change
- People still choose and buy. Someone comparing video editors still ends up on a site, a trial or a checkout.
- Pages still have readers. AI answers point to web pages; the pages people trust keep their audience.
- Ads still pay for the web. Google sells ads inside its own AI answers.
- Labels still apply. An ad written by AI is still an ad, and still needs "Ad" or "Sponsored".
- Search rules still apply. Google says there are no special optimisations for its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Why verified traffic matters more now
When anyone can generate a thousand pages in an afternoon, a page's word count proves nothing. What proves a page is worth sponsoring is who actually reads it. AdSworn reads each page's traffic straight from the publisher's Google Search Console and Google Analytics (read-only), with the searches that bring readers and the date it was read.

Straight answers
Will AI replace online advertising?
There's no sign of it. Google shows ads above, below and within its own AI Overviews. AI changes where ads appear and how they're targeted, not the need for businesses to reach buyers.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. Google says pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode by being indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no special optimisation, so ordinary SEO is still the way in.
Do AI assistants send traffic to websites?
Yes. They cite and link pages; ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, and Google Analytics groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot in an AI Assistant channel.
What should a small business do about AI?
Keep pages clear and well sourced, allow the search crawlers you want to appear in, measure AI traffic, and put ads on the pages your customers already read.
