AI-generated content and SEO: what Google says
Google doesn't ask who wrote it. It asks whether it helps.
Facts checked 3 Oct 2026 · by the AdSworn team
Google says its ranking systems aim to reward original, high-quality content however it is produced, judged on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). Using automation, including AI, to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings violates its spam policies. So AI is fine as a tool; mass-produced pages written for search engines rather than people are not.
Google's position
- Quality, not origin: Google's February 2023 guidance is titled around "rewarding high-quality content, however it is produced".
- E-E-A-T: its systems look for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.
- The line: automation, including AI, used with the primary purpose of manipulating rankings breaks its spam policies.
Fine, and not fine
| Fine | Not fine |
|---|---|
| AI drafts a page; a person who knows the subject checks and improves it | Thousands of near-identical pages generated to catch searches |
| AI summarises your own data or research | Pages that add nothing beyond what's already ranking |
| AI helps translate or tidy writing | Invented facts, figures or experiences |
| AI suggests ad copy a person approves | Fake reviews or testimonials |
On reviews, the Federal Trade Commission's final rule banning fake reviews and testimonials (announced 14 August 2024) is aimed partly at deterring AI-generated fake reviews.
