Will AI replace advertising?
AI is taking over parts of the job. Not the reason the job exists.

No: AI is changing how ads are made, placed and measured, not removing the need for them. Businesses still have to reach people who don't know them yet, and the platforms building AI answers sell ads inside them: Google shows ads above, below and within AI Overviews, and advertisers can't opt out of that placement. What AI replaces is manual work: writing first drafts, bidding, sorting audiences.
What AI is replacing
| Task | Before | With AI |
|---|---|---|
| First draft of an ad | Written from scratch | Drafted in seconds, then edited by a person |
| Bidding | Set by hand per keyword | Automated towards a target cost per sale |
| Finding pages to sponsor | Hours of searching | Describe what you sell, get matching pages |
| Reporting | Spreadsheets | Automatic summaries |
What AI isn't replacing
- The need to be found. A new product has no reputation for an AI to repeat. Someone has to put it in front of people first.
- Attention on pages. AI answers link to pages, and those pages keep readers who arrive there.
- Trust. People decide whom to buy from. Real reviews, real readers and clear labels still decide it.
- Payment for reach. Every platform with an audience, AI ones included, charges to reach it.
The evidence so far
Google's own Ads Help says ads can appear above, below or within AI Overviews, that Search, Shopping and Performance Max ads are eligible, and that advertisers can't opt out of the placement. Google Search Central says its AI features link to supporting websites and that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with people more likely to spend time on the site. Neither describes a world without ads or without websites.

Straight answers
Will AI replace advertising jobs?
It's replacing tasks such as first drafts, bid management and reporting. The judgement about whom to reach, what to say and where to spend still sits with people.
Are there ads in AI search results?
Yes. Google's Ads Help says ads can show above, below or within AI Overviews, and advertisers can't opt out of that placement.
Do I still need to advertise if AI recommends products?
Yes. An AI can only recommend what it has seen discussed. New and small businesses still need to reach people directly to get known.
