How online advertising works
Every online ad comes down to four questions: where it shows, who sees it, how you pay, and how you know it ran.
Facts checked 3 Oct 2026 · by the AdSworn team
Online ads are bought in five main ways: search ads (you pay when someone who searched clicks), social ads (you pay to reach people by profile), display ads through a network (one company places your ad across its sites), programmatic display (an auction places it, impression by impression), and direct sponsorships (you buy a specific page from its owner for a fixed price). They differ in who picks the placement, how the price is set, and what proof you get. Pick by your goal: clicks today, awareness over time, or a specific audience you can name.
The five ways to buy online ads
| Who picks where it shows | Usually priced by | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads | The search engine, from your keywords | Click (CPC) | People already looking for what you sell |
| Social ads | The platform, from your audience settings | Thousand impressions (CPM) or click | Reaching people by interest or profile |
| Display through a network | The network, across its sites | Thousand impressions (CPM) | Broad reach at a low price per view |
| Programmatic display | An auction, in milliseconds | Thousand impressions (CPM) | Scale, with automated buying |
| Direct sponsorship | You, page by page | A fixed price for a fixed period | A specific audience you can name |
With the first four, a platform decides where your ad appears. With a direct sponsorship you choose the page, and see its readers before you pay. More on that split in direct vs programmatic advertising and what an ad network is.
How ads are priced
Three pricing models cover most of the market. With CPC you pay per click; Google Ads says your maximum bid is the most you'll typically pay, and often you pay less. With CPM you pay per thousand impressions. With CPA you pay per conversion, or bid towards a target cost per conversion. A flat fee (a set price for a set period) is the fourth, and it's how most direct sponsorships work.
Whatever the model, you can turn any price into a cost per thousand views and compare like for like. The maths is in CPM, CPC and CPA explained.

How ads find their audience
- By what people search (search ads): the strongest signal that someone wants something now.
- By who people are (social and network ads): interests, location, past behaviour.
- By what people read (contextual and sponsorships): the page itself is the targeting. A reader of "best online video editors" is choosing a video editor.
Reading-based targeting needs no tracking cookies, because the page does the work. The searches that bring readers to a page are the clearest way to see who they are; see buying intent keywords.

How you know the ad ran
An impression only means the ad was served. Whether anyone could see it is viewability: the industry standard Google follows counts a display ad as viewable when at least half of it is on screen for at least one second (what counts as an ad view). Then there's traffic that isn't real people at all; Google calls it invalid traffic and filters it (how to avoid paying for fake ad traffic).
Which kind should you buy?
- Name the goalA sale this week is direct response; being remembered next quarter is awareness. They're bought differently: brand awareness vs direct response.
- Name the audienceIf you can say what your customers search or read, you can buy the pages they read.
- Pick the pricing that matches the goalClicks for direct response, impressions or a flat period for awareness.
- Decide what proof you needViews and clicks counted by someone other than the seller, and a refund if it doesn't run.
- Start small and keep what worksOne page or one campaign, measured, before a bigger budget.
Every ad must be labelled
In the US, the Federal Trade Commission says information that prevents deception must be disclosed "clearly and prominently". In practice: the word "Ad" or "Sponsored" where readers see it, and paid links marked rel="sponsored" so search engines don't count them for ranking. Ads that look like the content around them have their own rules: what native advertising is.

Straight answers
What is the cheapest way to advertise online?
There's no single cheapest channel: price depends on the audience. Compare offers by converting each into a cost per thousand views or per click, then weigh how close those people are to buying.
Do I need a big budget to advertise online?
No. Search and social ads run on daily budgets you set, and on AdSworn a banner on a small page starts at $25 for four weeks. Start with one placement and measure it.
What is the difference between an impression and a view?
An impression means the ad was served. A view (a viewable impression) means it had a real chance to be seen: for display ads, at least half of it on screen for at least one second.
How do I know if an online ad worked?
Tag the ad's link with campaign parameters so visits and sales show in your own analytics, and compare what you paid with what those visitors bought.
