Online advertising platforms: the main types, and how to choose
Six ways to buy online ads. They differ in who picks where your ad shows, and how you pay.
Facts checked 11 Oct 2026 · by the AdSworn team
Online advertising platforms fall into six main types: search ads (pay per click on what people search), social ads (pay to reach people by profile), display networks (one company places your ad across many sites), programmatic exchanges (an auction places it, view by view), creator sponsorships (a YouTuber or newsletter mentions you) and direct page sponsorships (you buy a spot on a specific page). Choose by your goal: buyers searching today, a broad audience, or a specific audience you can name.
The six types at a glance
| Type | Who decides where it shows | Usually priced by | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads | The search engine, from your keywords | Per click, by auction | People searching for what you sell right now |
| Social ads | The platform, from your audience settings | Per 1,000 views or per action, by auction | Reaching people by interest, age or job |
| Display networks | The network, across its sites | Per 1,000 views | Wide reach at a low price per view |
| Programmatic exchanges | Automated auctions, view by view | Per 1,000 views | Scale, bought by software |
| Creator sponsorships | You pick the creator | Per video, post or send | Borrowing a creator's trust with their audience |
| Direct page sponsorships | You pick the exact page | A flat price per term | A specific audience, seen before you pay |
Auction platforms: search, social and display
Most big platforms sell by auction. On Google Ads you set a maximum cost per click, and Google's help page says you'll often pay less. On display placements you can bid per 1,000 views instead. Meta says its auction doesn't simply pick the highest bid: it also weighs how likely people are to respond to the ad and the ad's quality.
The upside is scale and precise targeting. The trade-off is that prices move with competition, and the platform, not you, decides most of where the ad appears. More in direct vs programmatic advertising and Google Ads too expensive?.
Direct platforms: creators and pages
On a creator or page sponsorship, you choose exactly who carries your message, and you usually pay a flat price. There's no auction, so the price doesn't change because a competitor bid more. The audience is narrower, but it's one you can name before you pay: the readers of an article about video editing tools, or the viewers of a tutorial channel.
